Heresy Era Death Guard: Fire Raptor

$

Its been a quite 2 weeks on the blog, but the Forge has been running day and night to build and paint this bad-ass - the Legion Fire Raptor!

This was bought for me on Games Day by my girlfriend for my birthday (what a Gal!) Its a great kit, full of detail and easy to put together. Plus you get a tonne of plastic spare parts which will come in very handy in the future.

I've taken this guy out for a spin at club the other night, and its an absolute BEAST! It accounted for around 3 quarters of my victory points that game! Gonna have to get me a second!

(Apologies for the picture quality - this guy is so big it barely fits inside my light box)

Rear Door:

Hellstrike Missiles:

Engine detailing:

The Avenger Bolt Cannon:

Engine exhausts:

The Reaper Autocannon Pods:

These were magnetised so they could be removed more easily for transport and storage:

Here's a scale shot with a Contemptor and Legionary:

I'm still working on the scenic base - this is where i'm at so far:

I also snapped a few WIP pics while building and painting:

With a Legion Support Squad and another 10 Legionnaires waiting to be painted, i'll be pumping out plenty of Death Guard over the next week!

DIY Hyperios Missile Platforms Painted

The Missile Platforms are now ready for play testing now they are painted! Just a quick paintjob for these guys, with a scheme in keeping with the rest of the Death Guard army.

I decided to keep the missile themselves white as opposed to the off white/brown od the rest of the platform. I'm not sure if i'm happy with that choice, but i'll run with it and see how I feel.

A scale shot with a Legionary:

During that painting session I also managed to get eh Fire Raptor Base painted.

That's all for now. Coming up, more Death Guard Legionnaires and Support Squads.

Heresy Era Death Guard: Flamer Support Squad Completed

A small splash of Legion action today in the form of a Support Squad armed with Flamers.

These guys will be rocking around in a Rhino armed with a Heavy Flamer, with the sole task of clearing objectives and shifting dug in units. I had a quick game with them after I just built them, and they toasted a Dark Eldar Raider and a Haemonculus in one sitting - not to shabby. Upgraded with Chem munitions for free (as they're Death Guard) and they get the Shred USR (and also Gets Hot!) but I try not to think about that one!

I actually converted the Sargent to carry a Deathshourd Power Scythe - the army list allows anyone who can take a Power Fist to be armed with a power Scythe instead at the same cost. The conversion came out great I thought...

Until I discovered that you could only take the Power Scythe if you had the legionnaires Astartes (Death Guard) special rule....which generic support squads don't! DOH! So I had to convert him back again! Which was much more of a pain than the initial conversion.

Now that these guys have been completed, I've gone into Terrain mode again - but this time it APOC Terrain! More on that soon.

Return from a Hobby Hiatus; Heresy Era Death Guard Army List

I'm back from an unscheduled break in the hobby. Usual reasons apply but I was also incapacitated in hospital with a spinal problem, which for now, is thankfully resolved.

This of course has meant no painting and no gaming over the last 5 weeks! I haven't even spent a single penny on Forgeworld for 2 months either! might have to check myself into rehab soon...

Recently FW released an awesome model of Calas Typon of the Death Guard. This immediately triggered an army list re-write to try and fit him into my 2000pts. He's a pretty mid-range character, and for those unfamiliar with him, his stats are below:

Calas Typon - 200pts

WS     BS     S     T     W     I     A     Ld     Sv
 6         5       4     4       3      5     4      10       2+

Master Crafted Deathshroud Power Scythe
Hand Flamer with Chem Munitions
Grenade Harness
Nuncio Vox

He also has a One Use Chem Bomardment, a Lv1 Psyker, and counts as a Denial Unit.

He is a bit of a point sink for a mid-range character, but he will suit my needs well as a clearance unit attached to my Deathshroud Terminators. Being a Denial Unit is also a billy bonus (and its a kick ass model) So this is how the list is shaping up now:

Apocalypse Terrain: Imperator Bridge

$

Today I want to share a terrain project I've been chipping away at for the past few weeks; Imperator  Bridge.

This piece is being built especially for an Apoc' game to be fought at the end of the Campaign being held at my FLGS Worcester Wargames. They have 2 rows of gaming tables and the idea is that a number of bridges will be constructed to link the tables making a battlefield worthy of Apocalypse.

The section of the bridge that will be suspended is 4ft long, with two 8in tabs at either end to place on the tables. The bases of the towers are separate as are the bases of the sides of the bridge. This is to enable easy transportation, and also to allows the pieces to be used individually in other smaller games.

Pegasus Building Panels and GW Cities of death Panels have been used for the construction, with some artists mounting board used for the tops of the towers and sides. The Apoc' game won't be until the spring, so there's no rush on this build. I'll just keep chipping away until then. In the meantime, I have yet another Battlefield in a Box project gaining momentum!

Tyranid Capillary Tower Tutorial

$

Now i've sorted a picture upload problem with Blogger, I can progress with some posts! That's to those who offered up suggestions - turns out Google Chrome worked!

So, today we have my attempt at making some Tyranid Terrain, Capillary Towers. With the recent Tyranid release the Hive Mind has reimposed its will upon me, so I'm keen to make some terrain to accompany my newly refreshed 'Nid force.

Capillary Towers are the core of Tyranid tabletop scenery for me, so this is the first thing i wanted to try. I spotted these polystyrene cones in Hobbycraft the other day which i thought would make a good base for the Towers.

 Start with quartering the cones:

Each quarter will form the base of a Capillary Tower.

Base it (i used plasticard here as the Styrene's so light)

Now start planing out the chitin plates that will go on the bask of the Tower. for this i used artists mounting board - its cheap and thick, good for chitin plates.

Stick them to the back of the styrene tower, overlapping them slightly as you go. As you can see, this overlapping left me a bit short at the top in the end!

So i just trimmed off the excess styrene to make it fit.

OK, so that's the bulk of the structure done. now for a few little details. These are some bead type things i found for 99p a packed. There's about 20 in there.

These were perfect for adding some spiky protrusions to the front of the Tower. You'll also see that I've added some texture to the front of the Tower with some Quick Dry Filler from a DIY store.

So that was my first attempt...however, I'm not terribly happy with it. Something about the plates on the back isn't sitting right with me. I think they're to flat, so i had another go. This time i trimmed the sides of the styrene a bit to help the card curve around it a bit better.

I followed the same steps as before, but wrapped the card around the Tower a bit more. This made me a bit happier, but not entirely satisfied!

Here's a quick scale shot:

All in all I think I might have to come up with another way to make Capillary Towers. I think I'm on the right track with the Polystyrene cones, but think i need a better way to make the chitin plates. I might have a solution for that problem, but will have a quick go before i share that with you lot!

Thoughts and suggestions welcome!

Tyranid Hive Crone

So I picked up this guy from my FLGS on the day of release (getting a cool 20% off!) to enhance my current list. Although I run a Flyrant, it's the only flyer in my list, so some air support was sorely needed.

The colour scheme is the same as the rest of the force, simple and striking. You can find a tutorial on the scheme here. The base for this guy is still WIP. I borrowed one off my Legion Fire Raptor for the photos.

Drool Cannon, a S6 AP4 template weapon (no Torrent though...) bit of a 'meh' weapon, but  its OK. The fleshy weapon areas were picked out in Scorpion Green, washed in Thrakka Green, then highlighted in a watered down Scorpion Green again.

Carapace markings.

Tentaclids (those are the missile things under the wings) These are the key to the Tyranids air superiority. They're only S5 and One Use but they're also Haywire and Seeking (re-roll misses) Pretty good if you ask me, and when combined with a S8 Vector Strike (due to its Raking Strike rule) it makes for a pretty mean anti-air unit.

I magnetised the Tentaclids to help me keep track of how many i've used!

Overall this is a great model. However, with only 2 sprues in the box, i would have been annoyed if i had payed full price for it. For what's in the box, its steep for £48, i don't care how good it is. Despite that, I'm looking forward to giving it a go in a game and seeing what kind of impact its going to have.

Home-Made Tyranid Spore Chimney

$

This is an idea that's been brewing since I started building the Capillary Towers. I always loved the Tyranid Spore Chimney from Forgeworld so i had a crack at making my own to go with my 'Nid terrain.

This is the finished build! The main skeleton was a polystyrene cone quartered and based around a polystyrene ring. This was then covered in air-drying clay and shaped. This is definitely my new favourite terrain material! Dead easy to use and shape, and only 24rs to dry.

This is the chimney itself. It was based around some random piece of pipe i had in my bits box. The inner surfaces of the towers were coated in some slightly watered down polyfilla. This made it a lot easier to apply, and gave it a less 'stony' effect (see my first attempt at a Capillary Tower)

Some extra texture was achieved by adding some medical gauze coated in watered down PVA glue. This gave it a great organic look. It also looks suitably disgusting!

I had a crazy amount of spare 'Nid bits which were useful for this piece.

I used one of GaleForce 9's Tentacle Makers to make the tentacles in the middle. I made them out of clay as well, which worked just as well as Green Stuff or Milliput.

I used the ends of Devourers to make spikes on the towers.

Some more medical gauze to add texture.

It was easy to get a smooth finish on the carapace of the towers. I also added some ridges with the back of a knife to break it up a bit.

Also some impact craters from the doomed defenders of  the planet!

The edges of the Chimney were modelled to make it look as though the Chimney had grown out of the ground. This broken earth effect will look better after its based and painted.

A scale shot with some spare Termagants. I'll be going with the same colour scheme i used for the army on the Chimney.

As an afterthought i added some spikes to the edges of the carapace. This are from some spare Trygone sprue's i had.

Finally some WIP shots. All in all this piece cost me around £10 to make!

I'm looking forward to painting this! Also look out for Capillary Towers Mk2.

Carnifex Crush! New Additions to the Swarm!

$

So the other day I thought I'd beef up my 'Nid list a bit. With the drop in price for Carnifex's, it seemed like the best place to start. I managed to pick up 2 new Carnifex's for £24 each (bargain!) from my FLGS, and i had another one already which i ripped the arms and head off! I'll run the 3 as a Brood.

This is the one I had already, which I removed the arms and head off. I want to arm him with 2 Twin Linked Devourers, but I only have Deathspitters at the moment which I'll proxy for now.

This is one of the new ones armed with actual Devourers - the so called 'DakkaFex'!

To complete the Brood I've included a Crusher Fex, armed with Crushing Claws and Scything Talons. He is my tank and Fortification killer!

I took the time to magnetise the arms on all of the Fex's:

The magnets fitted perfectly into the sockets, so no work required there.

The arms required some minor alteration to get the angle right for when they're attached to the arms, but otherwise it was straight forward.

3 Fex's should be enough for my army needs, and with the ability to swap out the weapons arms, they should be all the Fex's I need! With any luck i'lll get to run them out this week and see how much havoc (and fear!) they create!

Crusher 'Fex Complete

The first of the 3 new 'Fex's are complete - the Crusher Fex got first dibs! The colour scheme from the rest of the army was easily applied, with a few extras.

The same distinctive markings run the length of the carapace:

The Crushing Claws are highlighted with some Codex Grey with an airbrush to break up the black of the carapace.

The same was done for the Crushers tusks.

The magnets held up well following painting:

I have a huge amount of Tyranid spare parts, so the Carnifex's arsenal with be varied!

The other 2 'Fex's are well on their way to completion - more on that soon.

Tyranid Capillary Tower Tutorial Mk II

$
0
0
So after the initial experiment making a Tyranid Capillary Tower i decided to have another go, further refining my technique.

Firstly, base your quartered polystyrene cone. This time i used a pre cut wooden disc as the base (which looks much neater!).

To help create the effect of broken ground around the base of the tower, i glued some foam pieces around the base to assist with the effect.

Once they dry, start cutting the ridges into the back of the styrene piece. I roughly measured out the spaces to create a roughly uniform look. These will just provide a guide for when the clay is applied later on.

Once the ridges are cut in, take some air-drying clay and begin to coat the back of the tower. Make sure you coat the tower in a reasonable thickness of clay as this will help you cut details into it later.

Coat the foam at the base of the tower in clay as well to create the broken ground effect.

Once your happy with the shape of the clay, carefully cut some ridges into it, following the cuts made in the styrene foam earlier. For this i used the back of a kitchen knife.

The clay will take roughly 24hrs to dry and i recommend waiting before moving to to the next step, otherwise you'll end up putting finger marks in places you really don't want them!

Once your happy the clays dry, take some basic polyfilla (or similar). This needs to be applied to the front of the tower. I watered down the filla with water in a 50/50 mix. This obviously makes it more runny, and will hopefully give the filla a more organic look when dry. Try to cover every surface of the styrene so it doesnt melt when you spray it later on!

Give this an hour of two to dry before adding some texture to the front of the tower with some medical gauze soaked in PVA glue. At this stage you'll also need to add some 'spikes' in the front of the tower. You could use anything for this, as long as its vaguely pointy!

This is great at creating an organic feel. Make sure you stretch the gauze between different sections of the tower. Base the tower with some sand, and your build is complete!

Give it another 24hrs to let the gauze dry and get painting! I went with the same colour scheme i used for the rest of my 'Nid army, but you might want to go for something more neutral.

After painting and varnishing i added one final touch - slime! I did this using a hot glue gun, stringing the glue between different sections of the tower. Do this after varnishing, otherwise the glue would go cloudy with the vanish.

I couldn't decide whether to go with spots or stripes on the back of the towers - what do you guys think?

Scale shot with the Crusher Fex!

A close up of the 'slime'. This was really easy to achieve, i think it really makes the towers pop!

There we have it. There's another 7 Towers at different points of construction on the table at the moment, as well as the Spore Chimney which is now half painted. More on the terra-forming efforts of the Hive Mind soon...

The latest weapon in the arsenal of the Hive Mind - a Canifex Brood!

I've never run 'Fex's before (couldn't tell you why!) but with the dramatic points reduction in this new edition, it was hard not to - if at least to give them a go!

You saw the Crusher Fex in the last post, so here's the completed Dakka Fex with two twin linked Devourers.

This is the second Dakka Fex - although i've used Deathspitters here until i source some more Devourers (got 2 but need 2 more) Of course the weapons arms are magnetised, so weapons swaps won't be a problem!

Looking forward to giving these guys a run out!!

With the successful build of the Capillary Towers I quickly wanted to get the Spore Chimney painted to see if it would look as good! I wasn't disappointed.

The application of the 'slime' was quite a lengthy process! It was worth it though.

Painting the central tentacles really helped make them pop!

I went with the stripes here for the carapace markings.

The broken groundwork was left based in a dark grey as not to distract from the main chimney.

Finally a scale shot with some Termagaunts!

I'm really pleased with his piece! The only trouble now is going to be transporting it! Especially when I build a second...

Jumping on the Knight Bandwagon! Legio Astorum Knight

Its been a bit quiet on the blog lately. As usual though, the Forge has not been idol!

Like everyone else in the hobby world, I became absurdly excited with the news of the Imperial Knight release.  Naturally I ordered one from my FLGS (with a cool 10% off RRP), and assembled it immediately.

I made a small adjustment to the pose of the legs. I hated how it was so static (about the only thing i don't like about the model) so i went for a forward-striding pose. I wanted my Knights to match my Reaver from the Legio Astorum Titan Legion, so i replicated the scheme on the Knight.

I haven't made a decision on the transfers i want to use yet, so i've left them off for now. That being said, it looks pretty smart without them!

I used the Eclipse symbol of the Legio Astorum for the shield decoration. Its a little wobbly, but it was my first attempt!

I lavished the usual amount of time on the base, going for a generic urban theme.

Chain sword Arm:

Battlecannon. Finished off with some weathering powers.

The working parts at the rear were kept simple, with a splash of bronze.

Some weathering was applied to the top of the carapace to break up the blue.

Naturally i magnetised the arms:

Unlike most magnetised Knights, i magnetised the limbs at the elbow:

Most I've seen magnetised at the front of the weapons housing. Reason i did this was because if Forgeworld release any weapons options (which they're sure to do) then its more likely that they'll be sold as a whole arm. Well, that's what I'm hoping!

Finally here's a shot of the Knight with Praetorian! Like father like son eh?

Tyranid Capillary Towers....Have Multiplied!

The capillary towers have been quietly multiplying over the past few weeks.... almost enough terrain for a 6x4 table now. There are still 2 large towers waiting to be painted.

Some baby towers bulked up the numbers nicely!

I really like the 'ruined' towers! The only reason these were made is because i broke the polystyrene by mistake!

And of course, the Spore Chimney. One day i will do a second one of these, but with an Apocalypse game coming up at the end of May (of which i'm providing a great deal of terrain!) ill be focusing on other projects. Namely the recently neglected Imperator Bridge!

I also attended a small local doubles tournament in March (which we came unexpectedly 2nd!) at which the Towers got a look it. Here they are in (in)action!

More terrain, and hopefully Legion Death guard, soon!

Apocalypse Game May 2014

My poor neglected blog! Gearing up for this Apocalypse game has been a real trial, resulting in an absolute terrain building frenzy! It was all worth it though, because we ended up with a great looking table!

The idea was that 2 sides battle over 3 crossing points into the Imperial city. The bridge below was Andy's effort (done at very short notice!)

This is what i have been slaving over lately - Imperator Bridge! Its nearly 5 feet long and 2 feet wide.

The final crossing point was this infected Tyranid Section. More like a Bio-Bridge!

This is my Defence Laser Heretics Bane, finally painted up! Its inspired me to build to long planned second laser.

These are just a few random shots of the game in full swing. We had 7 players each side, with each player bringing 2000pts each. It was Imperial vs Xenos.

Yes, that is an Eldar Phantom Titan (well over 2K of points on its own, but we allowed it!) This is what destroyed my beloved Reaver Titan Praetorian.

The Imperial side of Imperator Bridge - not terribly inviting!!

Space Wolves and Grey Knights guard the Tyranid Bio-Bridge.

A massive Dark Eldar force loaded with Kabilites and Incubi!

The Phantom stood watch over the Xenos side of the bridge, wipping out 4000pts of models on its own!!

Despite a Vortex grenade swirling around its feet for the whole game!

There wasn't much left of the Imperial defences once 4 Daemon Princes landed...

Imperitor Bridge in the final stages of the game - a last minute dash for the objective in the centre.

This was a really great day! We had a lot of players who had never played Apocalypse before but they all seemed to really enjoy it. I'm hoping that this will be the first of many to come.

Im really looking forward to getting back to some model painting now. I've spent to long building terrain. I did  pick up the new HH Book III: Extermination, and im loving the new Mechanicus list in there! I'll scrape some cash together and get building soon.

So there's been a few new developments on the Heresy Death Guard front. The army is so close to completion, and these units bring it a big step forward.

First up - Deathshroud! I just love everything about these models, they just scream 'bad-ass'! I'd love to have a few more squads of them - maybe later... This unit is nearly done, with just some weathering and washes to go.

As i was rummaging through my hobby storage i found a couple of boxes of those old Urban Basing kits from a few years ago. They were perfect for jazzing up their bases.

I also got started on the penultimate squad of Legionaries. Only 5 more to go after this and that's 40 done and ready!

Lastly there's a Support Squad with Volkite Calivers. Will be parking these lads in some cover to wreak havoc on enemy infantry.

The only units i need after this are Calas Typhon and a Spartan. Save the best till last eh?

The Deathshroud Terminators are now complete, and now i love them even more! So much i'll be ordering another 5 at the end of the month. They're definitely the most iconic unit that the Death Guard have (aside from Moritarion himself of course)

The bases really came out nice on these guys - gives them a little extra something.

Some detailing on the back of the Terminators.

Arm mounted Chem Flamers.

As with the other Death Guard the shoulder pads were airbrushed with 2 layers of green.

Really pleased with this unit. I've moved onto the other 2 units that are on the table, and they're well on their way to completion. Theres another 40K tournament coming up, and im not sure whether to take these guys  or not. Its in August so im going to get as much done as i can and then decide. Landed second place in the last one, so im hoping for a similar success!

A Bit More Heresy Death Guard...

Just a quick post today. Another 5 man squad is painted up which will quickly become another 10 man squad when my Forgeworld order arrives.

The Volkite Support Squad is well under way.

Now this Storm Eagle has been in pieces on my shelf for about 6 months! I bought this off a guy in my FLWG for £60 - it was in a hell of a state, being the victim of poor assembly. I pulled it a apart, tidied it up, and put the poor guy back together again.

I was just going to put it on eBay but after all the work it took to restore it, i decided to add it to the Death Guard! Why not.

So the final bits of the Death guard army are on their way from Forgeworld. This included's the last 5 man Tactical Squad, Calas Typhon, Moritarion, a Spartan, and some more Death Shroud and Grave Wardens for good measure!

After that, the blessed Omnissah gets some attention...
